Philippine School for Maritime & Medical Access, INC., started its humble beginnings as a sole proprietorship in year 1994 and eventually converted into corporation in 7th July 2000. It started its operation in Paco, Manila, where most of the target clients are located. It was put up by individuals who had wide teaching and managing experience in training centers and manning agencies. Most of the incorporators are deck and engine officers who have expertise in their own field. Generally, programs of PSMMA are geared for sea based and land based workers who wish to upgrade their skills and work in overseas shipping companies. Due to high demands of workers onboard international shipping vessels PSMMA offered additional courses to address the needs of the market. In the year May 2008 PSMMA opened its first Maritime and HRM school in Novaliches , Quezon City offering Maritime and Hospitality and Restaurant Management course accredited in TESDA and MARINA.
The company has evolved through the years after its transfer operation from Manila to Quezon City. It has established tie-ups with different shipping lines and major hotels in Metro Manila where students could take their OJT Program. It has created growth and opportunities for the students enrolled in the different courses offered by PSMMA especially the youth of the nearby areas where education was provided at par with the leading schools but at a lower price. It is the mission of the company to nurture , enhance and develop the talents of the youth by providing them good education at a lower cost. The vision of the company is to produce globally competitive Filipino workers who are known for their:
1) good knowledge of the job
2) suitable communications skills
3) appropriate human relations and job attitude
The company has continuously been realizing a yearly 30% increase in its enrolment figures and almost 80% are gainfully employed locally and internationally every year. It has started with 80 students enrolled in 2008 and now has an enrolment figure of 383 after doing a regular career orientation, web-site marketing, flyer distribution and out field marketing activities that were found to be effective. The increase enrolment demonstrates the company’s effective education program which is being supported by TESDA’s massive campaign on the need and relevance of finishing TECH-VOC courses greatly in demand abroad.
Though the company is still considered in its growth stage, it may expand its operation further through the introduction of more courses in the years to come. With the opening of the K-12 program together with the ASEAN integration by 2016 , it hopes to create more training programs that will open other avenues of opportunities beneficial to the school, students, the community and the country.
PSMMA clients are those coming from the areas surrounding such as Caloocan, Novaliches, Fairview and a part of Bulacan. Most of its enrolled students are those recommended by PSMMA graduates, walk-in students, those coming from the marketing activities like career orientation to public schools, web-sites and other sources.
Others schools such as those offering bachelor’s degree in maritime and bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management are availing PSMMA services on OJT program for vessel and hotels where PSMMA has a tie-up agreement. Some of the school tie-ups are University of Cagayan, Yanga Colleges, lemery Colleges.
PSMMA has entered into partnership training with different hotels and domestic shipping lines where its students and students of other schools could be assisted for the OJT program in line with the completion of their course program and as part of its dual training program. A Memorandum of Agreement has been entered into with the institutions listed below:
